The X-Men Snags 1st Half Crown, WXYZ-WMYD is runner-up! Todd Boleski nearly perfect!

Paul Gross - 1/22/2025

By Adcrafter Paul Gross

For those not familiar with Adcraft bowling, here’s a quick refresher:  our season is divided into two halves, with the first and second place teams of each half qualifying for the end-of-the-season playoff for the championship and the coveted Lew Houghton Trophy.

The X-Men entered this week in first place, five points ahead of WXYZ-WMYD, and seven points ahead of Gross Weather.  First place was clinched when The X-Men won its first game with WXYZ-WMYD on the strength of Kevin Taylor’s big 191 game (41 pins over average).  WXYZ-WMYD rebounded to win game two as Don Ashcraft tossed a ginormous 224 game…this clinched the second playoff spot.

Fourth place Ampersand squared off against third place Gross Weather and started well with Joel Happel (184) and Mark Sienkiewicz (134) rolling enough over par to seal the deal.  Gross Weather rallied in game two as Matt Buckman (237), Dave Burzynski (203) and Ye Scribe (210) all got it going.  But Joel Happel (223 – that’s 57 pins over average) and Paul Garland (241, and the best Christmas name in the league) grabbed game three and total pinfall to tie Gross Weather for third place in the first half standings.

The fifth and sixth place match was identical to the match above, with iHeart Media’s Rockin’ Rick Hunt (237, which is 62 pins over average) and Dandy Don Kowalewski (216) grabbing the opener.  Neuner’s Automotive then ate some spinach (a la Popeye)…actually, I think it was just an extra serving from the sumptuous Adcraft bowling holiday potluck…and seized the final five points of the match.  Neuner’s Todd Boleski flirted with perfection by rolling the first ten strikes of game two enroute to an astounding 286 game…highest in the league this year… with best supporting bowler Katherine Jenkins (181 twice) doing the rest.

CBS Detroit Bowling Stones arrived with a “take no prisoners” attitude, and it worked well as they swept the always spirited 2 Legit to Split squad.  Despite only bowling a gross in game one (144 = 12 dozen = 1 gross…a very special score for this author that earns special recognition from the Adcraft bowling president), Andrew Moore came back with a nice 207 which, along with stellar bowling from teammates Frank Collins (222, 195) and Mike Holowecki (201) prevented any comeback from Aaron Gonzalez (143…just missed his gross!) and Shahina Patel (172).

The Wigglers started the night victorious in games one and two, with Sam Tacconelli (203) and Drew Blohm (211,212) leading the way.  Undaunted (well, maybe they were a little daunted, but overcame it), Shattered Dreams roared back to take game three as Maxwell Petrie did most of the damage with a super 215 game in the finale.  To be transparent and fair to Shattered Dreams, two teammates were last minute scratches as they were out sick, so Petrie and Shannon Gorman had to stave off the Wigglers attack with only half a team.  Not bad to grab one game!

This match was another sweep, as Minds in the Gutter never took the pedal off the metal (or put the ball in the gutter or, whatever) and put a pretty good whoopin’ on F’n Ten Pin.  Steve McCollum (161, 179), Amy Merithew (132), Steve Cunningham (a pair of 145s…just missing his gross twice), and Dennis Manning (192, 191, 196) demonstrated some great team bowling.  Denise Bennett (143…just missed her gross, too) and Jeff Friedman (202, 203) put up some stiff resistance, but needed more help.

The final match of the night was also a sweep, as Oh Split! took out Spare Me 7-0.  I don’t know what Oh Split’s! Julie Cybek (178, 55 pins over average) ate at our potluck, but next year I’m going to have some of that.  Combine that with Lisa Zimmerman’s 144 (she got her gross!) and Melissa Snyder (175, 188) made it pretty tough sledding for Spare Me, which got a nice game from Judene Bald (153) and Ryan Lee (202).
